MIAMI (December 15, 2018) --- Howard University women's basketball picked up a decisive 89-62 road win today over Florida International University (2-8). Howard improves to 7-3 on the season.
Tamiracle Taylor put the Panthers on the board first with a quick layup in the first 30 seconds of the game.
Krislyn Marsh responded next after missed three pointers on both sides. A 4-4 tie was the only time in the game that the Panthers would match the Bison. Howard got off to an 11-4 lead that was difficult to overcome. Each time FIU fought back to close the gap, Howard would eventually pull away. The first period ended 23-16.
The Bison opened the second period with consecutive three pointers by
Sarah Edmond that put the Bison up, 29-16. Freshman
Gia Thorpe contributed significantly, making nine of her 11 points in the period. The Bison went up by as many as 18 before closing the first half, 42-26.
The second half was all Howard. With less than a minute left, the Bison led by 29 in the fourth quarter. By the time the game ended, it was a 27 point, 89-62 victory over the Panthers.
Sarah Edmond and
Jayla Thornton led the Bison in scoring. Both had 16 points. Edmond collected the double-double adding 10 assists plus five rebounds. Freshmen
Krislyn Marsh and
Gia Thorpe also scored double figures with 14 and 11 respectively. Marsh added four rebounds. Thorpe had six rebounds. Collectively, Howard shot 48.6 percent from the field and 64.7 percent from the free throw line.
