WASHINGTON (October 6, 2018) – Coach
Phillip Gyau and the Howard University Men's Soccer team came up short in its Sun Belt Conference (SBC) opener versus Georgia Southern (GSU), 2-1, at Greene Stadium on Alumni Day.
With the loss, HU fell to 1-5-3 (0-1 SBC) while the Eagles moved to 5-4-1 (1-0 SBC) on the season.
Howard was the aggressors throughout, outshooting GSU, 13-10.
With intermission approaching, Georgia Southern's Edware Raji put GSU on the board first before halftime, 1-0.
Shortly after the break, senior
Victor Guirma (New Paltz, N.Y.) tied the contest, 1-1, thanks to an assist from graduate student
Joel Cunningham (Spanish Town, Jamaica).
At the 55-minute mark, GSU's Gonzalo Talavera delivered the go-ahead goal to down HU, 2-1.
Junior goalkeeper
Carlos Caro (Silver Spring, Md.), reigning SBC Defensive Player of the Week, registered three saves in the loss.
Tuesday (Oct. 9), Howard starts a brief two-match road swing in Piscataway, N.J. where the Rutgers Scarlett Knights await. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
