Howard Drops 9-5 Decision To Coppin State

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In the final game of the series, the Howard University softball team dropped a 9-5 decision to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe Coppin State on Sunday afternoon at Nationals Youth Academy.

With the loss, the Bison fell to 1-24 overall and 1-8 in the MEAC as the Eagles improved to 5-30 (3-6 MEAC).

Both teams had hot bats today as the Eagles tallied 10 hits and the Bison recorded eight. However, the two squads had some issues on defense that led to runs. Howard finished the game with four errors while CSU had three blunders.

Brooklyn Emory pushed her hitting streak to four games and Alannah Baiyina is up to three straight games with a hit.

Alex Flynn (1-7) was charged with the loss after she allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits in 2.1 innings. Alexa Walker pitched 4.2 innings of relief and gave up four runs (two earned) and six hits.

After three quick outs in the opening frame, CSU used a RBI single in the top of the second to go up 1-0.

Howard responded in the bottom of the second as Emory demolished a home run over the right field fence to tie the score at 1-1, giving her back-to-back games with a homer.

The Eagles stacked the bags in the third with one out and used a hard grounder to right field to plate two runs. CSU kept the hits coming with a two-RBI double for a 5-1 lead.

Howard gave the Eagles' defense a tough time in the sixth. The Bison started by loading the bases on a pair of CSU errors and a walk by Emory. Up next, Tiana Lopez was hit by a pitch and a fielding error plated two runs to cut the deficit to 7-3.

The Eagles managed to add a pair of runs in the seventh on two singles, pushing their edge to 9-3.

In the final frame with two outs, Milan Poindexter singled to right field to get on base. Kamryn Tillman stepped up to deliver a triple to left field to send Poindexter home. Emory came out swinging for a single to right field that let Tillman scamper in for the final 9-5 margin.

UP NEXT: Howard will visit Norfolk State for a three-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 14 at 1 p.m. The Bison will play a single game on Saturday, Apr. 15 at noon.
