Lyon's Grand Slam Leads Howard To Victory Over MDES

WASHINGTON, D.C.Chloe Lyon's grand slam in the bottom of the fourth helped seal a 6-3 win for the Howard University softball team over MEAC foe Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday afternoon at Nationals Youth Academy.

The Bison claimed the series, 2-1, and closed the 2017 season with a 4-34 overall record and 4-14 mark in conference action. The Hawks dropped to 11-25 overall and 5-13 in the MEAC.

Pitcher Alex Flynn tossed a complete game for her fourth victory. She gave up 10 hits and three runs with two strikeouts. Adrienne Guerra (7-13) was charged with the loss after letting in six hits and five runs (four earned) in three innings of work.

The Hawks got on the board in the third after a deep single helped a run slip in for a 1-0 edge.

The Bison responded in the bottom of the inning as Kamryn Tillman singled to the pitcher and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Milan Poindexter singled to centerfield and got another base on the throw, putting two runners in scoring position. Deja Henderson looped a double through the left side to bring both runners in and give Howard a 2-1 lead.

Flynn was hit by a pitch and Lopez walked to start the home frame of the fourth. Tillman reached on a fielding error to stack the bases. A pair of fielder's choices and plays at the plate kept the Bison from scoring – until Lyon took a swing. Lyon demolished a grand slam over the left field fence to clear the bases and extend Howard's advantage to 6-1.

MDES showed spunk in the sixth as the visitors chipped into the deficit, 6-3, with a two-RBI double but the Bison stepped up their defense in the seventh to close the contest on a high note.

Howard finished the game with seven hits, led by Tillman with two. Tillman and Poindexter had two runs apiece, while Alannah Baiyina and Lyon had one run each. Thanks to her grand slam, Lyon notched a game-high four RBI, followed by Henderson with a pair of RBI.
