WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University softball team came up short in a non-conference doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday night at Nationals Youth Academy.
Both losses came in five innings as the Bison fell 12-4 in the first game and dropped a 13-1 decision in the nightcap. Howard is 2-33 overall while the Mount moved to 19-26.
GAME ONE
Kamryn Tillman went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run. Alex Flynn and Chloe Lyon tallied two hits and one run each, while Alannah Baiyina and Deja Henderson notched one hit apiece.
Pitcher Alexa Walker (0-16) suffered the loss in five innings of work. She allowed 12 runs (nine earned), 12 hits and struck out three.
The Mount used a three-run homer in the opening frame to get on the board. The visitors didn't slow down as they added six more runs between the third and fourth for a 9-0 lead.
In fifth, Mount St. Mary's scored its final tallies on a two-run homer and RBI single.
The Bison tried to rally in the fifth. Walker started Howard's half of the inning with a walk. Lyon singled up the middle and Flynn laid down a bunt to load the bags. Tillman stepped up and drilled a double to the fence to plate two runs. Next up, Flynn scored on a wild pitch and a double by Henderson brought Tillman in for the final 12-4 margin.
GAME TWO
Monica Thompson (0-7) gave up all 13 runs (11 earned) on eight hits in 1.1 innings in the circle. Alex Flynn pitched 3.2 innings of relief as she limited the Mount to just three hits.
After putting up five runs in the first, the Mount erupted for eight runs on four hits and two Howard errors in the second for a 13-1 advantage.
Alex Flynn posted the only run of the game for the Bison after she reached on an error by the pitcher in the first. She moved over to second on a ground out before stealing third. Up to bat, Milan Poindexter roped a double to centerfield to bring Flynn home.
Poindexter was 2-for-2 at the plate and had a RBI. Alannah Baiyina and Alexa Walker tallied one hit apiece.
UP NEXT
Howard will close out the regular season with three games against Maryland Eastern Shore. The Bison will start the series on Saturday, Apr. 29 with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. before wrapping up play on Sunday, Apr. 30 at noon.
