Washington, DC—It is one of the longest rivalries in HBCU basketball. It will be the 105th that they have met on the hardwood when Howard University Morgan State University on Monday night in Burr Gymnasium. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU with Kevin Brown and veteran Stan Lewter calling all the action.
With the regular season winding down, both teams are in need of victories. The Bears (10-13, 7-3 in the MEAC), who are coming of a tough home loss to Delaware State on Saturday, are jockeying for one of the Top 4 seeds as they trail NC Central, Norfolk State and Hampton.
The Bison (5-20, 2-8 in the MEAC) just need a win, period as they have dropped six in a row and are fighting to improve their current position in the league standings.
Most of Morgan State's success runs through Phillip Carr, who ranks among the conference best in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots.
In the throes of this skid, the Bison have fallen into a pattern of falling behind by double digits early, rallying to take the lead or get close and then not be able to finish out games. Their problems have been compounded by not enough scoring power, missed shots and costly turnovers.
James "JT" Miller and Charles "CJ" Williams are the two most consistent scorers as they combine for over 30 points between them. But there has been no consistency among the remaining starters or reserves.
There should be added incentive with the game being shown before a national audience. The theme of the game is "Love and Basketball" as a tribute to Valentine's Day on Tuesday.
