Hampton, Va---James "JT" Miller scored a team-high 20 points and Charles "CJ" Williams and Tyler Stone each added 13, but it was not enough to offset a second half performance by freshman Jermaine Marrow, who tallied 16 of his game-high 23 points as Hampton pulled away to a 75-61 win over Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at the HU Convocation Center.
The loss was the sixth straight for the Bison (5-20, 2-8 in the MEAC) while the Pirates (11-13, 8-3 in the MEAC) captured their fifth straight.
Again, Howard fell behind by double digits early, trailing by 11 at the seven-minute mark with Lysander Bracey, Kalin Fisher and Marrow combining for 22 of the Pirates' 36 first half points.
The Bison fought back near the end of the first half on the scoring of Stone, who came off the bench to score seven points and get his team to within 36-30 at the intermission.
Buoyed by the strong close, Howard came out and put together a 13-4 run to take a 43-40 lead five minutes into the second half. Miller and Williams spurred the run with 10 of the 13 points between them.
The two rivals battled back and forth until Marrow led a surge that gave his team a 10-point cushion and all but decided the outcome. Marrow got seven of his points from the free throw line and found teammates to account for his career-high 10 assists. AJ Astroth was the recipient of most of Marrow Marrow's dimes as he finished with 10 second half points on 5 of 6 from the field.
Stone, who has played well of late, hit on 5 of 8 from the field, grabbed 5 rebounds and blocked a career-high 5 shots in 20 minutes off the bench.
Williams did not have a particularly good shooting night as the Pirates rotated four different players on him.
Most of the stats were even except rebounding (45-35), fast break points (10-2) and bench production, where Hampton held a 23-13 advantage.
Marrow proved to be difference in the first half, collecting seven points and six assists in 15 minutes of play. He got support from Lysander Bracey with eight and Kalin Fisher who contributed seven.
NEXT UP: Howard will try to stop the losing skid when it hosts Morgan State University on Monday at 9:10 pm on ESPNU.
