Bison Meet Quakers Monday Night

Howard hosts Penn for the second annual ALS Awareness Game

WASHINGTON (December 3, 2017) – After earning their first win of the season, Coach Kevin Nickelberry and the Howard University Men's Basketball team host Penn for the second annual ALS College Awareness Basketball Game, presented by Full Court Press on ALS. Game-time is set for 7 p.m. inside The Burr.

Fans can follow all the action via live video.

MATCHUP PREVIEW

Monday's matchup will be just the second meeting between HU and Penn with the Bison winning the inaugural meeting on Nov. 17, 2007 in Philadelphia, 80-65.

"Penn is a quality team that we will have to play well against for 40 minutes," Nickelberry stated. "They are experienced and have played quality competition like us this season. It's imperative that we are able to play great defense and rebound so that we can get out into transition. I'm looking for our guys to build off our last game and keep taking strides forward."

After getting their first victory of the season, HU (1-7) seeks to build momentum as gear towards conference play, which begins Jan. 3 at Florida A&M. Howard ranks among the league leaders in three-point attempts (208). Offensively, the dynamic duo of guards RJ Cole and Charles Williams spearhead the Bison attack. Cole leads the club in scoring (19 PPG) and assists (6.5 APG) while Williams, 2017-18 MEAC Preseason All-Conference First Team selection, is second on the team in scoring, averaging 16.6 PPG.

Penn (5-4) continues its eight-game road swing while playing three games in five days this week. The squad makes its first ever appearance inside The Burr. This season, John R. Rockwell Head Coach Steve Donahue and the Quakers have eclipsed at least 90 points on three occasions. Additionally, seven different players have scored 20 or more points in a game this year.

LAST TIMEOUT

Thursday (Nov. 30), HU earned its first win of the season after defeating Central Penn, 81-64, inside Burr Gymnasium.

Howard shot a season-high 46-percent (30-of-65) from the floor while hitting 10 trey balls.

Williams registered a game-high 23 points and six rebounds while Cole fell an assist shy of a double-double, finishing with 20 points and a career-high nine dimes in the victory.

Off the bench, freshman Kyle Foster recorded a career-best 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting from long range.

PROMOTIONS

Monday's promotion is building awareness and fund-raising initiatives around the crippling disease known as Lou Gehrig's disease (also known as ALS).

The founder of "Full Court Press on ALS" Dr. Michael Honrychs was diagnosed with ALS in May of 2014 and since his diagnoses, he has dedicated his life to raising awareness to the disease through a sport that he loved dearly, basketball. Dr. Honrychs' passion for basketball led him to create the New Jersey based Gym Rats AAU team – which helped over 200 young men obtain college scholarships, degrees, and even launch a few successful NBA careers. After Honrychs was diagnosed with the disease, he created Full Court Press on ALS, a nonprofit organization formed to help ALS research and funding through educational awareness summits and collegiate basketball awareness games.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to host and partner with Full Court Press on ALS while honoring the men whose influence on the game of basketball has been immeasurable," said Nickelberry. "Monday night's game will be an incredible show of basketball and community for students and fans in Burr Gymnasium and for those watching."
