Bison Battle Hawks In SBC Quarterfinals

Men’s Soccer meets Hartwick in tourney opener

WASHINGTON (November 7, 2017) – Coach Phillip Gyau and No. 5 Howard University Men's Soccer team battle No. 4 Hartwick in the Sun Belt (SBC) Quarterfinals. Match time is set for 12: 30 p.m. at Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium in Conway, S.C.
 
All matches of the tournament will be carried on ESPN3 and available on the ESPN app.
 
TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
 
The host of the 2017 Sun Belt Men's Soccer Championship, Coastal Carolina (CCU), locked up the tournament's No. 1 seed and won a second consecutive regular-season title with a win in its season finale on Saturday night.
 
CCU (10-6-1, 4-1-0) is the top seed after defeating Georgia State, which earned the No. 2 seed, 3-1 on Saturday in Atlanta. Both the Chanticleers and Panthers (11-6-1, 3-1-1) earned byes to the semifinal round.
 
The tournament begins with first round matches on Thursday, Nov. 9 and concludes with the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 12.

MATCHUP PREVIEWS
 
The first round features a regular-season finale rematch between HU (1-14-3, 0-3-2 SBC) and Hartwick (7-8-1, 2-2-1 SBC) where both squads ended in a draw, 1-1, at Greene Stadium. With less than five minutes remaining, sophomore forward Brandon Hood tied the match with an unassisted goal, 1-1.
 
With a victory, Howard would square off against top-seeded Coastal Carolina Saturday at 12:30 p.m. On Nov. 1, the Bison dropped a heartbreaker to CCU, 2-1, at Greene Stadium.
 
With a win Friday, HU would advance to the SBC Finals where they could possibility meet No. 2 Georgia State, No. 3 Georgia Southern, or No. 6 Appalachian State. Championship Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
 
On Oct. 14, the Bison were unable to keep Georgia State off the board as they fell on the road, 3-0.
 
On Oct. 28, Howard rallied from a 3-0 deficit to pull within one, but came up short as the Eagles held off the Bison, 4-2. Junior Joel Cunningham and sophomore Andres Gomez each scored in the loss.
 
After two 45-minute halves and two 10-minute extra periods, HU and the Mountaineers ended its match in a draw, 0-0, at Greene Stadium on Oct. 7.

* - Appalachian State and Howard finished the season tied with 2 points. Using the two-team tiebreaker, the teams still tie after a regular-season draw. The next process is to determine which team has the greatest goal differential from all conference matches. Howard wins the two-team tiebreaker based on a -6 goal differential in all conference matches compared to Appalachian State at a -9 goal differential in all conference matches.
