Bison Knock Off VMI

Several Bison display outstanding performances

WASHINGTON (November 5, 2017) – After a tough loss versus Mount St. Mary's, Coach Nicholas Askew and the Howard Women's Swimming & Diving team rebounded with a 146-109 victory over Virginia Military Institute (VMI) at Burr Pool.
 
A trio of Bison were honored with the team's Golden Goggles, HU's most outstanding female performer of the meet: juniors KaSandra Kaplan and Latroya Pina and sophomore Leanne McMaster.
 
Kaplan claimed the top spot in the women's 100-yard backstroke (59.92) and 400-yard individual medley (4:41.46).
 
McMaster finished first in the women's 100-yard breaststroke and freestyle.
 
In the first event, Kaplan and Pina joined sophomore Andreas Weech and freshman DeAngela Fobbs to win the women's 200-yard medley relay.
 
Fobbs also placed first in the women's 100-yard butterfly (1:02.60), edging out Weech (1:02.78).
 
Freshman Abolade Oyetunji and junior Marina Markous took first and second, respectively, in the women's 200-yard freestyle. Additionally, Markous won the women's 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.69).
 
Fellow classmate Chandler Carter earned the top spot in the women's 200-yard backstroke, recording a 2:23.53 time.
 
HU rounded out the afternoon with another victory in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay with Fobbs, Weech, McMaster, and senior Danni Brown.

HU hits the road where they will face three opponents in two days.
 
Howard goes to Ashland, Va. to meet Hampden-Sydney and Randolph-Macon Friday. The action starts 6 p.m.
 
Saturday (Nov. 11), the Bison travel to Wilson, N.C. for a dual meet against Barton College. First race at 1 p.m.
