SPOKANE, Wash. (November 15, 2017) – Coach
Kevin Nickelberry and the Howard University Men's Basketball team traveled across the country where they lost to No. 17 Gonzaga, 106-69, at the McCarthy Center.
"Tonight, we played against a legitmate top tier program in a very raucous arena," said Nickelberry. "They overwhelmed us early with their size and over time it wore us down I think. In the defeat, I liked the way [Zion] Cousins fought on the glass and [RJ] Cole competed through the double teams.
HU struggled from the field, shooting only 31-percent (21-of-68). Cole led the Bison attack, registering 16 points and four dimes. Cousins grabbed a team-best 10 boards in 23 minutes of action.
Redshirt freshmen
Nate Garvey and
Kai Tease gave HU energy off the bench, combining for 14 points.
"[Kai] Tease and [Nate] Garvey made some shots tonight," Nickelberry added. "It just wasn't good enough."
Sophomore
Charles Williams had a tough night, scoring only four points and four boards.
"We have a couple days to get our legs back," Nickelberry expressed. Hopefully, we can get [Charles] Williams back on track and make some other adjustments.
For Gonzaga, they had four Bulldogs in double-figures, led by Zach Norvell, Jr. with a game-high 18 points on 50-percent (7-of-14) shooting from the floor.
Howard's road swing continues with another trio of games in six days, starting Nov. 18 at Eastern Michigan. Tipoff at 3 p.m.
Then, the Bison travel down to State University, Ark. where Arkansas State awaits. Game-time is slated for 8 p.m.
On Nov. 22, HU battles South Florida in Tampa, Fla. Tipoff begins 7 p.m.
