WASHINGTON (October 27, 2017) – Howard University Women's Volleyball team wrapped up its home stretch with a five set loss versus Maryland Eastern Shore (31-29, 15-25, 22-25, 25-21, 12-15). As a result, the Hawks snapped HU's eight-match winning streak.
Three Bison registered double-doubles in the loss: junior
Tamia Dockery and seniors
Khaila Donaldson and
Jessica Young.
Dockery recorded 47 assists and 14 digs, along with seven kills, two blocks, and an ace. Donaldson had a match-high 18 kills and 12 digs while Young added 12 kills and 10 digs in a losing effort.
Both squads hit under .100 in the first set, but HU held on to win, 31-29.
Maryland Eastern Shore rebounded and took sets two and three after posting a .278 hitting percentage.
The fourth set witnessed HU finding a rhythm and hitting .278; thus, forcing the fifth and deciding set, 25-21.
Howard took the early 4-0 advantage in the fifth set, but Maryland Eastern Shore rallied and took the lead after consecutive kills from Alana Polk, 8-7. Donaldson delivered a kill and tied the match, 8-8. Down the stretch, attack errors from HU put the Hawks ahead and Eastern Shore never relinquished.
Other notable Bison performances included sophomore
Kira Porter producing 12 kills in five sets. Defensively, senior
Carlise Cardoza manufactured 18 digs and newcomer
Jurnee Tipton posted 15 digs.
For Maryland Eastern Shore (22-7, 8-0 MEAC), they remain unblemished in league play and hold the top spot in the MEAC Northern Division. Four Hawks produced double-doubles in the win.
Sunday, Howard (10-14, 6-2 MEAC) begins a three-match road swing in Dover, Del. where the Delaware State (DSU) Hornets await. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Memorial Hall Gym.
