BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Howard men's soccer team concluded its three-game road trip with a 3-1 loss to University of Alabama at Birmingham on Tuesday night at BBVA Compass Field.
The Bison have a 1-8-2 overall record as the Blazers move to 4-2-3.
Redshirt senior Kenneth Hersey made his 11th start of the season in goal for HU, where he notched six saves. He also posted the only goal of the night for the Bison.
Rookie Quentin Valiente took the first shot of the match for Howard but had it blocked by the UAB defense. Freshman Brandon Hood and senior Xavier Rajpaul both sent shots wide before Hood forced the Blazers' goalie to make a save.
UAB tallied all of its goals in the second half. Philip Makinde scored for the Blazers in the 53rd minute before Massismo Ferrin tallied on a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead. Deandre Robinson rounded out the trio as he took a shot while falling.
In 88th minute, Howard was awarded a penalty kick for a handball in the box. Hersey came out of the net to take the kick and was able to bend the ball just right to score his first goal.
Howard trailed 18-9 in shot attempts and 8-2 in corner kicks. UAB's Joe Kuzminsky had two saves. Julian Mehl replaced him in the 76th minute and allowed the Bison to score.
Howard returns to Greene Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. against Robert Morris.
