WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard women's soccer team begins its quest for its third straight Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship when it visits Alcorn State on Friday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. ET. The Bison will follow up with a match against Mississippi Valley State on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. ET.
Howard (3-3-1) snapped its three-game skid with a 2-0 win over Virginia Military Institute last Sunday. Anna Mitchell and Noelle McCullom tallied for the Bison in the shutout.
The Bison have eight players that were named to the Preseason All-SWAC Team, including Offensive Player of the Year Kela Gray, Defensive Player of the Year Kendall Hamilton and Goalkeeper of the Year Mackenzie Diotte.
Through seven games, Mitchell and McCullom pace the team with two goals apiece. Diotte has spent 477 minutes in goal, having made 33 saves. She has a .750 saves percentage and a 2.07 goals against average.
Alcorn brings a 0-2 overall record into Friday's match. Rita Okoro has the lone goal of the season for the Lady Braves. When the two teams meet last year, the Bison came away with a 2-0 victory.
MVSU has an 0-5 mark to start the 2016 season. Laadi Issaka leads the team with four points on two goals. In last year's meeting, the Bison bested the Devilettes, 3-1, in Mississippi.
