WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University volleyball team welcomes UMBC to Burr Gymnasium on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. for its home opener.
The Bison (3-0) are coming off an impressive opening weekend after sweeping the D.C. Challenge with wins over George Mason, Georgetown and American. The Bison only dropped three sets during the two-day tournament. Sophomores Tamia Dockery and Olubunmi Okunade joined tournament MVP junior Khaila Donaldson on the All-Tournament Team.
On Monday, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its first weekly honors of the season. Okunade was picked as Player of the Week and Dockery was Setter of the Week. Senior Morgan Marlbrough was chosen as Defensive Specialist of the Week to round out the honors.
Donaldson currently leads the team with 3.25 kills per set. Dockery is averaging 10.1 assists/set while Marlbrough has 4.50 digs/set. Okunade has a team-high .625 hitting percentage.
UMBC (2-1) opened its season at the Radford/Virginia Tech Invitational last weekend. The Retrievers won their first two matches before falling to the Hokies.
The two teams have met 25 times before Tuesday, with the Retrievers holding a 21-4 advantage in the all-time series. Howard was triumphant in last year's meeting with UMBC, taking home a 3-1 victory in RAC Arena. The Retrievers are paced by Abbie Mirabella, who is averaging 4.82 kills/set.
