Norfolk, VA---The Howard women's basketball team will be looking to end the regular season on an upnote when they play the Lady Spartans of Norfolk State at Echols Hall on Monday at 5:30 pm.
The Bison (5-23, 2-12 in the MEAC), who have lost five in a row, have had problems scoring in the second half through most of the season, most notably the third quarter.
During the last two games against Florida A&M and Hampton, Howard led at half against Florida A&M and trailed by only five against the Lady Pirates on Saturday.
Each time, they were outscored and managed only seven points in that stanza.
All five starters average double figures but senior center Victoria Gonzales has been the only player to consistently score in recent games and many of her points have come after the game was decided.
When Te'Shya Heslip (16.0), Imani Bailey (15.8), Jasmine Hill (10.4) and Sydni Johnson (10.9) along with Gonzales (19.9) are all clicking, the Bison could be a dangerous team headed into the MEAC Tournament.
In Norfolk State (2-22, 2-12 in the MEAC), Howard faces an opponent that they match up well with. When the two teams met on February 10 in Burr, it was one of the most entertaining games of the season. The Lady Spartans had six players in double figures while all five Howard starters finished in double figures, with Bailey leading the way with a career-high 37 points.
The two teams battled back and forth and took two extra periods before the Lady Spartans prevailed, 110-108 for their first win of the season. Since that time, they enter the game with a three-game losing streak.
