Hampton, VA---It is crunch time as the regular season winds down and the Howard University men's basketball team will be looking to build some momentum as they take on the Pirates of Hampton University at the Convocation Center at 6 pm. You can follow the action on live video at http://media.hamptonu.edu/piratetv/
The Bison (12-17, 6-8 in the MEAC) snapped a two-game losing skid with a 63-53 win over Florida A&M in the home finale on Wednesday. In that contest, Howard parlayed the scoring of junior guard James "J-Byrd" Daniel III's 24 points and a dominating defensive effort by junior center Marcel Boyd and junior forward Tyler Stone, who combined for 26 rebounds and 9 blocked shots against the Rattlers.
It is going to take that kind of effort against the Pirates (16-9, 11-2 in the MEAC), who are in first place in the conference and trying to secure the top seed and capture the regular season title. Howard is trying to improve its seeding position with a strong finish.
Hampton defeated the Bison, 68-65 on February 8 in an emotional game at the Burr that extended their win streak over Howard to 12 games. That game featured four technical fouls assessed between the two teams. Chievous had a double double (17 points, 15 rebounds) and Johnson did damage with 22 points and 9 rebounds. But it little-known Dionte Adams who could have been the difference with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Daniel led all scorers with 20 and Boyd had 13 points and 10 rebounds, but the Bison got little else from the rest of the team. Boyd will have to provide more offense as will junior guard Damon Collins, Stone and junior guard Kofi Andoh.
The last three contests between the two rivals have been decided by a total of 8 points. There should be special incentive for Daniel, who hails from Hampton, having prepped at nearby Phoebus High School. The all-time leading scorer in Howard history and the nation's leading scorer (27.6) is averaging over 21 points in his career against the Pirates
