Baltimore, MD-James "J-Byrd" Daniel, III scored a game-high 28 points to move up to second place all time in scoring school history, but it mattered little as Christian Kessee and Josh Treadwell combined for 53 points to lead Coppin State to a 90-66 win over Howard in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at the Physical Education Complex.
Â
Daniel, a 5-10 junior guard from Hampton, VA needed 22 points coming into the game to surpass Gerald Glover who had 1,712 during his career at Howard.
His three-point play at the 7:48 mark of the second half, giving his 23 points. He now needs 7 points to surpass Aaron Shingler, the all-time leader, who scored 1,724 from 1963-67.
The Eagles (6-18, 4-7 in the MEAC) jumped out to the early lead and kept the Bison (10-15, 4-6 in the MEAC) playing catchup all game.
          Â
Kessee led the charge by scoring 18 of his team's points on 7 of 9 from the field and 4 of 4 from the three-point line. Tradwell chipped in with 11 on 5 of 8 shooting.
          Â
Howard, which has dropped four straight, are in the throes of a shooting slump. Daniel, who leads the nation at 28 points per game, led the Bison with 11 but he missed 9 of 11 shots while the team was 6 of 22 from the floor.
          Â
"When you get 19 offensive rebounds and you shoot 28 percent, it means that you are missing a lot of layups and open shots," said Howard head coach
Kevin Nickelberry. "But it is nothing new. It has been this way ever since we lost two of our top shot-makers (James "JT" Miller and Solomon "Solo" Mangham) to injuries. It has been a struggle."
          Â
The Bison trailed 42-29 at the half and opened 20-point lead before Daniel and
Keon Hill fueled a rally that cut the deficit to 13 points with almost 10 minutes left in regulation.
          Â
Then came what could have been the sequence of the game. Following a defensive stop, Howard had the momentum and was in shape to cut the lead to either 11 or 10 points. The Bison missed two chip shots at the basket and the Treadwell and Kessee made them pay by running off a 9-0 run that opened a 22-point lead and all but put the game away.
          Â
"That was critical for us," noted Nickelberry. "In a game like this, you are going to make runs, but you have to capitalize once you are in that position and we didn't. It was yet another missed opportunity for us."
          Â
The Eagles shot 53 percent from the floor, including 10 of 25 from beyons the arc for 40 percent.
          Â
The Bison shot 28 percent but they were able to maintain their consistency at the free throw line where they were 73 percent (26 of 36).
          Â
Hill finished with 13 points and Boyd just missed his seventh double double with 9 points and 14 rebounds.
          Â
Kessee tied his career record with 27 points while Treadwell tallied 26 for a career best. Trevon Seymore and Terry Harris, Jr. had 14 and 12, respectively.
