CHESTERFIELD, Va. – The Howard University men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center, hosted by Randolph-Macon.
Out of 88 possible entries, the Bison claimed 72 season-best times (41 women, 31 men), of which 11 were personal bests.
"I am extremely satisfied with our performance as a team this weekend," head coach Nicholas Askew said. "Mid-season championships is a time of year where we get to show what we are really capable of. The team's response to the opportunity was truly impressive."
The women's team finished fourth out of 11 teams behind 382.50 points.
KaSandra Kaplan set a new meet record in the 400 IM after swimming to first place in 4:34.26. She also broke the school record and finished the 200 backstroke in 2:09.67 for second.
Kaplan, Latroya Pina, Danielle Brown and Paris Phillips teamed up to take third in the 200 medley relay in 1:51.07. In the 400 freestyle relay, Leanne McMaster, Susanna Reese, Phillips and Kaplan placed third in a time of 3:39.49.
Brown came in sixth in the 100 butterfly (59.89) and Pina tallied a sixth place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.86) and 200 breaststroke (2:32.00).
Pina, Kaplan, Brown and McMaster completed the 800 freestyle relay in 7:58.53 to place third out of 18 teams.
The men's side was sixth out of 10 schools on 322.50 points.
Out of 42 swimmers, TJ Miller won the 100 butterfly in a time of 51.84 seconds. He also clinched first in the 100 freestyle when he clocked in at 46.79.
Don Brazelton claimed the top spot in the 100 backstroke thanks to swimming the race in 53.07, while Devin Guardino was fifth (55.20).
Miller, Brazelton, Philips and Mark McCluskey banded together for the 400 freestyle relay and managed to come in second in 3:11.88.
Brazelton swam the 200 backstroke in 1:59.58 to take second and Philips touched the wall in 1:00.37 to come in seventh in the 100 breaststroke.
Miller and Philips joined Noah Nicholas and Nicholas Haughton for the sixth in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:16.98.
Howard will be back in the pool in 2017 when it takes on UMBC in a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 7.
