Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mangham Leads Howard To Win

Washington, DC—Solomon "Solo" Mangham scored 10 of his team-high 17 points in the second half, including two key baskets and a couple of free throws to help Howard University hold off Central Penn, 67-60 in a non-conference men's game at Burr Gymnasium.  The win was the second straight for the Bison, who improve to 3-8 on the season.

Howard used its size advantage early to control the tempo against the shorter Knights.  Damon Collins, who missed the past two games with an ankle injury, led the way by tallying 11 of his 15 points in the first 20 minutes.  Kofi Andoh, who has played well of late and Marcel Boyd combined for 15 points as the Bison took what seemed like a comfortable lead to the locker room.

Howard increased the lead to 17 points on a 9-2 run in less than four minutes into the half.  A combination of some stifling defense that held the visitors without a field goal for over 10 minutes and some timely scoring from Mangham aided the cause.

But the pesky Knights refused to wilt under the pressure with a 26-9 spurt that tied the game at 56 at the 4:18 mark.  The rally was spearheaded by senior forward Tyrie Orosco who poured in 14 of his game-high 24 after intermission. Freshman Joel Zola did some damage off the bench, scoring all nine of his points in the second stanza.

Mangham, Charles "CJ" Williams, Kofi Andoh and Collins combined to outscore the visitors, 11-4 to secure the win.

A 6-6 senior forward from Atlanta, GA, Mangham hit on four of six from the floor in the second half while converting both of his free throws.

Mangham recorded his second straight double double with 11 rebounds to go along with his 17 points.

Collins' return was a welcome as the 6-5 senior from Dallas, TX, also registered a double double of 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Andoh, a 6-4 senior guard, added 13 and Marcel Boyd who has 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks.

The Bison were able to get production from its veterans.  It was especially important as Williams, who was coming off career-high 29 and 27 point games, back-to-back and Mingo, who also had double-digit scoring efforts the past two games, had off nights due to foul trouble.

Williams finished with six, 10 under his scoring average and Mingo with four.

"This was a good lesson for our guys in this game," said Howard head coach Kevin Nickelberry.  "We held a double digit lead for most of the second half, but did not make the plays that we needed to close out the game.  They did a good job of creating pressure which enabled them to make a run at the end.

This was the third game in five days for Howard and they have been playing with a short bench due to injuries.

"I am proud of these guys for finding a way to win and fight through the fatigue, especially since we have had four players who have played more than 30 minutes in the last few days," noted Nickelberry.

Central Penn (12-5), which played 14 players, was led by Orosco (24 points, 6 rebounds), Tyree Tucker with 10 Zola with 9 off the bench.

NEXT UP:  The Bison will look to extend their win streak when they travel to Norfolk, VA to take on the Monarchs on Thursday at 7 pm.
