WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Howard volleyball team ended the 2016 regular season with a spotless 12-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) record after sweeping Morgan State (25-11, 25-17, 25-22) on Friday night at Burr Gymnasium.
The Bison (23-5) have won 26 consecutive league matches, dating back to the 2015 season. Howard has only dropped three sets during its 13-match win streak and swept 10 outings. HU also has the third longest home winning streak with 17 straight victories in Burr.
Juniors Jessica Young and Khaila Donaldson tallied nine and eight kills, respectively, to pace the team. Sophomore Tamia Dockery added 17 assists to the stat sheet, while senior Morgan Marlbrough recorded a match-high 10 digs. Senior Dominique Cleggett was a force at the net with six blocks to go along with six kills.
The Bison quickly doubled up on the Bears, 10-5, to start the match. After three consecutive errors and trailing 14-7, MSU decided to call a timeout. Out of the break, sophomore Courtney Dalton, senior Whitney Fields, Donaldson and Cleggett all had kills to open the gap to 21-11. Howard scored the final four points on errors by MSU and a block from Cleggett and Donaldson ended the set, 25-11.
Although Howard started the second set with a 7-5 edge, the Bison needed to use a timeout after the Bears tallied three straight kills. Cleggett joined Dockery and Young on back-to-back blocks to push the lead to 16-12. The home team wrapped up the set on a 9-5 run which included another block by Cleggett, 25-17.
MSU had some ground to make up in the third set when the Bison jumped out to a 15-9 lead. The two teams traded points but Howard had five errors that allowed the Bears to pull within two, 21-19. MSU cut the lead to 22-21 on a Bison service error. Back at the net, Cleggett teamed up with freshman Jurnee Farrell for the rejection and Young slammed the ball down to wrap up the set, 25-22.
Natashia Barker had nine kills and eight digs for the Bears, while Roi Wallace notched 20 assists.
Howard will await the pairings of the 2016 MEAC Volleyball Tournament, which will take place at Maryland Eastern Shore from Friday, Nov. 18 through Sunday, Nov. 20.
