Bison Defeat St. Francis (NY) For First Win Of 2016-17 Season

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The Howard women's basketball team had four players reach double figures for its first win of the 2016 season in a 78-63 triumph over St. Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday night inside Pope Physical Education Center.

With the win, HU improves to 1-5 on the year as they handed SFC its fifth loss of the season (1-5).

After being down by nine points, the Bison fought back to head into halftime down 32-30. The two teams tied the score five times in the third quarter before HU took a 56-49 lead. Howard stepped on the gas in the fourth, outscoring the opposition 22-14 and led by as many as 16 points in the final 10 period en route to a 78-63 victory.

Redshirt senior Te'Shya Heslip had a game-high 19 points with eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Redshirt junior Erin Blaine added 16 points, while senior Sydni Johnson poured in 13 points, four boards and four assists.

Freshman Imani Bryant posted her first-ever double-double thanks to a career-high 14 points and 11 rebounds. She made 7-of-8 field goals and tallied three blocks.

The Bison shot a season-high 42.9 percent (30-70) from the floor, including 55.3 percent (21-38) in the second half. HU also made 54.2 percent of its free throws (13-24). Howard scored 42 points in the paint and earned 19 points off turnovers by the Terriers.

SFC had just one double-figure scorer with Olivia Levey adding 15 points and Alex Delaney pulled down 11 rebounds.

In its sixth road game of the season, Howard had to battle back from a nine-point deficit in the second quarter to cut the Terriers lead to 32-30 at the half.

Blaine scored seven straight points in the first 1:48 of the third quarter to give the visitors a slight 37-34 edge. The score would be locked up three more times until SFC got back in control, 45-41. A three-pointer by Heslip and layup by Bryant turned the tables as the Bison took a one-point lead, 46-45, and never looked back, outscoring the Terriers 15-4 in the final 4:42 of the third.

Howard opened up the fourth quarter with back-to-back threes from rookie Sarah Edmond and Johnson. The Bison kept pushing forward and took their largest lead of the game, 72-58, on a pair of baskets by Bryant. HU tallied 11 second chance points in the final quarter.

The Bison will conclude their seven-game road trip against Robert Morris on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m.
