MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Redshirt senior guard Te'Shya Heslip poured in a season-high 25 points as the Howard women's basketball team dropped a 95-49 decision to No. 21/25 West Virginia on Tuesday night at WVU Coliseum.
Along with scoring 51 percent of Howard's total points, Heslip added five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. She also went 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
Seniors Jasmine Hill and Sydni Johnson earned six and five points, respectively. Redshirt junior Erin Blaine and freshman Star Fitzgerald-Greer grabbed five rebounds each.
West Virginia (2-0) led 11-5 to start the game before Howard (0-2) cut the lead to 11-9 with three minutes to go in the period. The Mountaineers ended the opening quarter on a 9-2 run for a 20-11 advantage. Heslip tallied nine of Howard's 11 points in the first 10 minutes of play.
In the second quarter, WVU began the period on a 17-0 run until Heslip scored the first points for the Bison with 3:40 left in the half on a pair of free throws. She kept up the pressure and turned her dribble drive into a three-point play after drawing the foul. Fitzgerald-Greer made her debut in a Bison uniform and sank both free throws to cut the lead to 37-20. Howard held the Mountaineers without a field goal (0-for-8) for the last 5:37 of the quarter.
Heslip posted seven straight points in the third for the Bison but the Mountaineers outscored Howard, 24-11, in the fourth quarter to end the game.
Overall, the Bison shot 32.0 percent (16-of-50) from the field and 58.3 percent from the charity stripe (14-of-24). Howard tallied 18 points in the paint to go along with 18 points off 19 turnovers by the Mountaineers.
WVU had five players in double figures, led by Tynice Martin with 27 points. Lanay Montgomery had 13 boards, while Chania Ray totaled five assists and five steals.
Howard will prepare to face Michigan on Friday, Nov. 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on BTN Plus.
