WASHINGTON D.C. – Sophomores Victor Guirma and Gavin Boyer both scored in the second half to lift the Howard men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Georgia Southern on Senior Night at Greene Stadium.
It is the second win of the season and first in Sun Belt action for the Bison, who improved to 2-13-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
In his final time in goal in the nation's capital, redshirt senior Kenneth Hersey tallied four saves to earn the shutout win.
The two teams were evenly matched in the first half as both took five shots. It was the strong defensive efforts that kept the game scoreless after 45 minutes.
Guirma scored the game-winner in the 69th minute. Freshman Brandon Hood got a good shot off from close range but it was batted away by GS' net-minder Torgeir Fjaer. Guirma was there to stabilize the ball and clip it in to go up 1-0.
Just 14 minutes later, Hersey made a save to keep the Eagles off the board and the Bison sprinted up the field looking to score.
Rookie Andres Gomez got the ball on the wing and drew the keeper out, which gave Boyer time to set up on the right. Gomez threaded the ball through the box and Boyer finished off the play with a light tap into the net for the final 2-0 tally.
The Eagles (7-7-3, 2-1-1 Sun Belt) outshot the Bison 10-8 and attempted eight corner kicks.
Howard will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 5 when it visits Hartwick College at 2 p.m.
