Howard Rolls Past Norfolk State

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard volleyball team improved to 9-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action on a three-set victory over Norfolk State on Friday night at Burr Gymnasium.

The Bison are riding a 10-match win streak and have a 20-5 overall record on the season.

Junior Khaila Donaldson was the only player in the match to reach double figures in kills with 14. Senior Dominique Cleggett tallied six kills while sophomore Tamia Dockery handed out 24 assists.

Defensively, senior Katherine Broussard added a team-high nine digs. Classmate Whitney Fields was a force at the net, coming up with five blocks.

The opening set featured 10 tie scores and five lead changes. Howard had a slight 13-12 edge on a kill by Donaldson but NSU didn't let the lead last long. The two teams knotted the score four more times until the Bison posted three straight points to force the Spartans to call a timeout. NSU pulled within one, 22-21, but kills by sophomore Courtney Dalton and Broussard wrapped up the set, 25-21.

The Bison were on fire in the second set as they started out on a 10-2 run that sent NSU to its bench. The Spartans did not stand a chance as Howard kept pounding to open the gap to 20-9. A service error by the visitors and a kill from Donaldson handed over the set, 25-13.

Howard went up 13-7 to begin the final set, which included two kills and three blocks by Fields. The Bison opened the door for the Spartans to get within one, 16-15, after four errors. The score wasn't close for long as HU put together four consecutive points. An attack error by NSU ended the set, 25-20, for another Bison win.

The Spartans (6-17, 4-5 MEAC) were led by Jessica Johnson with seven kills and Hope Forsythe had seven digs. Tori Tulensru and Melvina Brown notched 12 digs apiece.

The Bison will host Hampton on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. for Senior Day.
