Howard (10-4-2) extended its Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) unbeaten streak to seven games with a pair of wins over Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern last weekend. Juniors Kela Gray and Noelle McCullom scored in HU's 2-0 shutout of PVAM and sophomore Anna Mitchell tallied the game-winner in double overtime for a 2-1 win over TSU.
The Bison lead the conference with a 7-0-1 mark. Gray is third in the SWAC in shots (44) and is tied for eighth in points (15). Junior Gabrielle Emilien tops the league standings and ranks among the nation's best in a pair of statistical categories, including 16th in save percentage (.873) and 35th in goals against average (.667).
Grambling picked up its first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Alcorn State. The Tigers are last in the conference with a 1-7 record. When Howard and Grambling met on the pitch last season, the Bison pulled out a 5-0 shutout.
UAPB is currently second in the SWAC with a 6-1-1 conference record. The Lions extended its win streak to three games after thrashing Alcorn State, 10-3 on Sunday. Howard played UAPB twice last year, starting with a 1-0 win in the regular season. The two teams battled in the SWAC Tournament, which had the Bison taking a 2-0 victory on their way to claiming the 2015 SWAC Championship.
