WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard men's soccer team could not hold onto an early lead as it was setback by Georgia State, 3-1, on Friday afternoon in Greene Stadium.
The Bison drop to 1-12-3 overall and 0-2 in Sun Belt action.
GSU held a 10-7 shot advantage but the Bison led the corner kicks, 4-1.
In his second straight start, sophomore goalie Joseph Hawes recorded three saves. Classmate Gavin Boyer attempted a team-high three shots.
Howard struck first at 11:40 after freshman Quentin Valiente sprinted down right side and crossed the ball to classmate Daniel Hart in the box. Hart pulled back and slipped the ball past GSU's diving keeper for a 1-0 edge.
It was Hart's second goal of the season and Valiente's first collegiate point thanks to the assist.
Less than two minutes later, Max Hemmings converted on a penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1.
In the 38th minute, Hemmings tapped Andrew Thompson's pass into the net for a 2-1 GSU lead heading into halftime.
Five minutes into the second half, Amiri Abraham slid the ball to Casey Shultis in the box, who put it in the left corner to go up 3-1.
The Bison will have over a week to prepare for its match on Oct. 22 against Coastal Carolina. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
