Strong Second Half Helps Men's Basketball Defeat Coppin State

Boyd, Daniel key in snapping four-game losing streak for Bison

WASHINGTON, DC --- James "J-Byrd" Daniel, III scored 18 of his game-high 28 points in the second half and Marcel Boyd added 13 of his 23 after intermission to lead Howard University to a 72-63 win over Coppin State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at Burr Gymnasium.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Bison (8-9, 2-1 in the MEAC) while the Eagles (2-14, 0-3 in the MEAC) dropped their 10th straight.

Coppin State led through most of a first half that featured a balanced attack with six players acoring between 5-8 points among them.  The Eagles, who are among the nation's leaders in three-point attempts, kept Howard off balance with a combination of three-point shooting, dribble drives and transition baskets.

Coppin State threatened to put some distance between them and the hosts when they opened an eight-point lead, 40-32, the biggest of the game at the 17:03 mark.
Keith Shivers and Terry Harris teamed to give the Eagles an edge as they combined for eight of their team's points.

Then Boyd took over.

The 6-11, 225-pound junior center from Accokeek, MD scored 11 straight points for his team, four of them on rim-shattering dunks, to get his team back into the game. The undersized Eagles tried several players, but they had no answer for Boyd, who was in his second game back after missing the previous three with a hand injury.

"The game plan coming in, was to take advantage of their size," said Boyd, who just missed his career-high of 24 points while also grabbing 14 rebounds.  "We just executed the game plan.  They were concentrating so much on J Byrd that it opened up things for me."

From there, the game went back and forth with five lead changes and three ties until it was Daniel's time.  The 5-11 junior guard from Hampton, VA, who has a penchant for taking over games and making big shots, helped put the game away by scoring 11 of his team's final 14 points, including a big three pointer that gave the Bison the lead for good.

"For most of the game, I was playing distributor, setting up my teammates," said Daniel, who leads the country in scoring with 28 points per game.  "The way Marcel was playing helped me get some good looks.  They were so concerned about him that it made it easier for me."  Daniel, who also ranks among the nation's leaders in  steals, picked up two to go along with his four assists.

The Eagles attempted to make a run but Howard was able to put it away as they connected on 8 of their last 10 free throws doen the stretch."

"We knew that they like to shoot the three," said Howard head coach Kevin Nickelberry.  "I told the team at halftime to keep playing tough defense and at some point we would stop their three-point shooting, transition game and dribble drive.  We did a much better job in the second half.  On the offensive end, Marcel was a man out there and J Byrd hit some huge shots."

Coppin State connected on 5 of 17 in the first 20 minutes but the Bison limited them to 1 of 12 in the second half.

Howard is still undermanned as they are missing starters, guard James JT" Miller and forward Solomon "Solo" Mangham, but they got a nice boost from sophomore guard Dalique Mingo (7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists), Tyler Stone (5 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists) and Jalen Jones (5 points off the bench)

Harris led the Eagles with 16 points and 9 rebounds, Shivers with 14 and Christian Kessee with 13.
