Dover, DE—
Tyler Stone scored eight of his team's last 13 points to help Howard University pull away to a 71-67 win over Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Memorial Hall. The game was originally played on January 11 but it was suspended at the 15:41 mark of the second half due to a clock malfunction and was rescheduled for today.
With the Bison (9-10, 3-1 in the MEAC) leading 41-38 at the start of the resumed action, the Hornets (1-17, 0-4 in the MEAC) began to find the range from three-point arc as Scott Sill and Dana Raysor helped fueled a run that gave their team a short-lived 48-47 lead at the 10:54 mark.
From there, it became a test of wills as Howard and Delaware State went back and forth until Stone began to take over. The 6-7 junior forward from Toronto converted on two free throws and a basket on a nice spin move down the lane to give the Bison a 60-54 bulge.
A basket by James "J-Byrd" Daniel, III and two free throws by
Marcel Boyd helped Howard get a little breathing room.
"I thought we did a better job on taking away their 3's by shading our defense to that side of the floor where they had been hurting us." added Nickelberry. After making three treys in a row, the Hornets missed 11 of their last 12.
"We talked before the game about giving all we had for the time that was left," said Howard head coach
Kevin Nickelberry. "Tyler did just that. He played with a lot of energy and his play was huge down the stretch, especially at the free throw line."
Delaware State refused to go away, however, as Todd Hughes, DeAndre Haywood and Raysor responded with a run.
Stone would close it out by nailing four straight free throws in the last 15 seconds to give Howard the victory.
Daniel, who missed the last game with an elbow injury, tallied 13 of his 23 after intermission. Daniel leads the nation in scoring at 28.5 per game.
"They did a good job on J Byrd, but he was still able to make some big shots and nice passes when we needed them," noted Nickelberry.
Stone and Boyd would prove to be the difference in the frontcourt, each recording double doubles and helping the Bison hold a 44-34 advantage on the boards. Tyler finished with 18 and 10 rebounds and Boyd with 13 and 10.
"I thought that
Dalique Mingo (7 points, 6 rebounds) and
Damon Collins( 4 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals) came through when Marcel got into foul trouble," said Nickeleberry.
Delaware State, which has dropped four in a row, was paced by Haywood, who led his team with 23, 18 coming in the first half, Raysor with 14 and Sill with 13 off the bench.
