Chestnut Hill, MA—The Howard University football team will try to rebound when it travels to Chestnut Hill to take on the Eagles of Boston College on Saturday at 1 pm. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
Howard (0-1) is coming off a 49-0 shutout to Appalachian State last week in which it had problems putting together and sustaining scoring drives. The Bison were 1 for 12 on third down conversions and it put a lot of pressure on red-shirt freshman quarterback
Kalen Johnson, who had a decent showing, completing 12 of 20 for 119 yards.
Red-shirt senior running back
Aquanius Freeman led the team in rushing and receiving but no one else was productive.
Defensively, the Bison defense surrendered 669 yards, forcing the defense to play long minutes. It resulted in some injuries.
"We have to make sure that we do a better job up front on both sides of the ball," noted Howard head coach Gary "Flea" Harrell. "We have to be more physical in the run game, both stopping it and running the ball. We saw a lot in the films that I am confident we will improve in those areas."
The Eagles (1-0) combined balanced offense and a stingy defense to defeat the University of Maine, 24-3 in their season opener at home last week. QB Darius Wade was efficient, completing 14 of 25 for 155 yards and two TDs, Tyler Rouse rushed for 81 yards and two TDs and Jon Hillman and Bobby Wolford and Sherman Alston combined for 9 catches and almost 100 yards.
"They pose another great challenge for us," said Harrell. "They are a well-coached football team and they are very balanced. We will have our hands full because they do so many things well. But I like the challenge. It will be a great atmosphere and it will certainly help this team as we move forward."
