FARMVILLE, VA --- The Howard women's soccer team found itself locked in a scoreless battle with Longwood University until a late second-half goal proved to be the difference for the Lancers in a 1-0 defeat of the Bison Sunday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Howard (1-3) looked to avenge its 1-0 Senior Day loss to Longwood (2-1) from 2014 but struggled to manufacture offensive threats, managing only six total shots in the contest compared to 23 by the Lancers.
Despite the team's struggles, the Bison were able to stay in the game thanks to freshman goalkeeper
Mackenzie Diotte, whose 11 saves nearly matched her total (12) from her two previous appearances.
The one save Diotte could not make, however, proved to be costly. In the 83rd minute, Longwood's Olivia Colella took a free kick right outside of the box and sent a shot past Diotte into the lower left corner for the eventual game-winning tally.
Howard had one final shot to force overtime in the game's closing seconds. Sophomore forward/midfielder
Whitney White sent a perfect corner kick into the box where sophomore forward
Kela Gray awaited. However Longwood's Janese Quick lived up to her name and deflected Gray's shot away.
Howard's second consecutive shutout loss marks the first time since the second and third games of last season that the Bison were held scoreless in back-to-back contests (8/29 vs UMBC, 9/5 vs Loyola Maryland).
NEXT UP: HU will begin a three-game homestand with a matchup against Robert Morris University on Friday, September 4 at 6 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
