FAIRFAX, VA --- Sophomore foward
Kyle Celestine once again set the pace for the Howard men's soccer team but did so in a losing effort as the Bison dropped a 3-1 decision to the George Washington University Colonials Sunday evening in the final day of Kuykenstrong DC College Cup at George Mason Stadium.
In the second half, Celestine snapped a scoreless tie that had lasted over 75 minutes when he converted on a penalty kick in the 77th minute. GW (1-1) would even the score five minutes later when the Colonials' Alastair Berry corralled a shot rebound and put home the equalizer.
Unfortunately for
Howard (0-2), GW would seize control of the game less than 20 seconds later as a three-man connection led to a score from 10 yards out for the Colonials' Garrett Heine. An insurance goal for GW in the 87th minute set the final score and put the game out of reach for Howard.
Even though Howard was outshot by GW (19-5), the Bison were still aggressive offensively, as evidenced by its 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Graduate student goalkeeper
Sam Howard made nine saves in defeat while playing all 90 minutes. The transfer from LaSalle University started both games this weekend and stopped 15 shots in his first two games as a Bison.
For his efforts, Howard was named to the Kuykenstrong All Tournament Team.
NEXT UP: Howard will take on another local opponent on Thursday, September 3 as the Bison Booters travel crosstown to face American University. First kick is scheduled for 3 p.m.
