Women's Basketball Loses to Norfolk State on Road

NORFOLK, VA --- Junior center Victoria Gonzales scored a team-high 18 points to lead four players in double figures, but it was not enough to offset the scoring of Kayla Roberts and Rae Corbo, who combined for 51 points to propel Norfolk State to a 90-71 win over the Howard University women's basketball team in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup at Echols Hall Saturday afternoon.

Most of Gonzales' points came after intermission as foul trouble hindered her in the first half. The Lady Spartans (8-13, 7-3 MEAC) took advantage of her absence as they took a 42-33 lead after 20 minutes. Corbo and Roberts teamed up for 21 first half points as NSU shot 55 percent.

Howard (3-19, 3-6 MEAC) was led in the first period by sophomore guard Jasmine Hill and junior guard Imani Bailey, who each had eight points.

The Lady Bison were able to stay within striking distance of the hosts early as Gonzales, Hill and Cheyenne Brown caught fire. But Corbo and Roberts led Norfolk State on a 14-2 run midway through the second half that all but put the game away. Howard was able to shoot a respectable 50 percent in the latter period, but the Lady Spartans shot a blistering 63 percent (20 of 32) to offset Howard's efforts.

Hill finished with 16 points - tying her career best - while senior forward Cheyenne Brown and Bailey tallied 13 apiece. In addition to her 13 points, Bailey recorded a career-high seven assists.

Roberts led all scorers with 26 (tying a career high) and 15 rebounds. Corbo finished with 25 and Koryn Lawrence & Aivah Parham contributed 12 and 10, respectively.

NEXT UP: Howard will finish its Virginia trip with a match against rival Hampton University on Monday, February 9. Tipoff for the first game of the women's-men's doubleheader is scheduled for 6 p.m.
