SAVANNAH, GA --- Despite a trio of players scoring in double figures - led by sophomore guard
Jasmine Hill - the Howard women's basketball team was unable to snap their current losing streak as the Lady Bison fell on the road to the Savannah State Lady Tigers, 70-59, on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Arena.
Hill scored a team-high 13 points for Howard (3-23, 3-23 MEAC), who have dropped five games in a row. Hill went 4-of-12 (including half of HU's four three-pointers), went 3-of-4 from the free throw line and added a pair of rebounds. Junior center
Victoria Gonzales extended her double digit scoring streak to 11 games by adding 11 points while sophomore forward
Sydni Johnson matched Gonzales on the scoresheet. Gonzales added eight rebounds, two steals and a block while Johnson dished out a pair of assists.
Junior guard
Imani Bailey and sophomore guard
Allese Morrison each chipped in nine points while sharing point guard duties. Morrison posted the most evenly balanced stat sheet on the team, logging career highs in rebounds (7), assists (5) and steals (5). Bailey added four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Hill scored the game's first points on a three pointer at the 19:04 mark. However, like most of the games this season, playing undermanned would cause trouble for the Lady Bison. Savannah State (14-10, 9-3 MEAC) would go on a 22-8 run over the next nine minutes to take their largest lead of the first half (22-11) with 9:19 left. Even with only eight available players, HU pulled to within three (35-32) with under 30 seconds left in the half before going to the locker room facing a 37-32 deficit.
However, Savannah State would gain enough distance to keep Howard at bay thanks to a two-minute, 10-0 run to open the second half. The Lady Bison, who never led after Hill's first basket, would only be able to pull to within eight the rest of the way.
The positives Howard was able to produce (82.6 percent free throw shooting; more assists and points off turnovers than SSU) were undone by several areas of concern (under 30 percent field goal and three-point percentages, -14 in paint points and -7 in rebounding).
SSU was led by Jasmine Norman (game-high 17 points off the bench) and Kenyata Hendrix (13 points; most among starters). Senior guard Ezinne Kalu had 12 points and eclipsed the 2,000-point mark for her career in the second half.
NEXT UP: Howard will play its final regular season road game on Monday, February 23 when the Lady Bison take on South Carolina State at 5:30 p.m.
