Victoria Gonzales chipped in 17 but the efforts of the trio would not not enough to overcome a seven-minute scoring drought as the Howard women's basketball team fell, 75-61, to Coppin State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup at the Physical Education Activity Center on Saturday afternoon.
Despite playing with only eight players in uniform, the Lady Bison came out strong as Bailey, Johnson and Gonzales combined to score 31 of the team's 40 first-half points. Howard (3-21, 3-8 MEAC) led by as much as 15 late in the first half, but the Lady Eagles took advantage of the undermanned Lady Bison, closing with an 18-8 rush to cut Howard's lead to 40-35 at intermission.
Coppin State (4-18, 3-8 MEAC) used the momentum to outscore Howard 33-17 through 15 minutes of the second half them a 68-57 lead at the 9:44 mark. During the surge, Howard, showing fatigue, missed several shots and turned the ball over. The Lady Bison would go about seven and a half minutes between scores at one point in the second period. CSU's Janelle Lane who scored 14 of her points in the second half and Jordan Swails who tallied 11 of her 24 were the difference.
The Eagles shot a sizzling 86 percent (18 of 21) from the free throw line in the second half to keep Howard at bay. They also got 31 points off 20 Howard turnovers against the fatigued Lady Bison.
Bailey, who logged 39 minutes added six assists to her stat totals while Johnson & Gonzales just missed double-doubles with nine rebounds each.
Lane and Swails both had double doubles with 11 and 13 rebounds, respectively.
