WASHINGTON, DC --- As a freshman in 2012, senior outside hitter
Jaleeza Stoudermire and the Howard women's volleyball team won a home match over the Morgan State Bears...for its first and only victory of the season.
On Friday evening, Stoudermire & the Bison edged the Bears for its tenth straight win, giving Howard its first outright Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division title since 1994 and at least a share of the Division for the second straight season after tying with Hampton in 2014.
What a difference four years makes.
Howard (15-13) swept Morgan State (25-21, 25-21, 25-21) in Stoudermire's final match at Burr Gymnasium to finish the regular season with a 11-1 (.917) MEAC record and secure the program's third consecutive winning season.
Sophomore outside hitter
Khaila Donaldson led the Bison with 14 kills while junior outside hitter
Katherine Broussard had her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and a match-high 10 digs. Freshman setter
Tamia Dockery had a team-high 24 assists, Donaldson & junior setter
Briana Jackson each had three service aces and junior outside hitter
Dominique Cleggett had four total blocks in the match.
Howard's offense was the sharpest it has been all season - the Bison set a new hitting percentage mark against Morgan, converting attacks at a .386 rate (43 kills / 11 errors / 83 attacks). In fact, HU has been hitting extremely well at just the right time: the team's top three hitting percentage marks have come in the last six games.
The success of the program - and Stoudermire's career - were celebrated in a postgame ceremony featuring former Bison volleyball players, administration and staff and her current Bison teammates.
NEXT UPHoward will now await its matchup in the 2015 MEAC Women's Volleyball Championship, being held from November 20-22 on the campus of Maryland Eastern Shore. As the North's No. 1 seed, the Bison will face whichever Southern Division team finishes fourth.
