Women’s Soccer Defeats Robert Morris For Season’s First Win

Box Score MOON TOWNSHIP, PA --- The midfielder duo of Nia Walcott & Dytria Ruddy each scored a goal and the Howard women's soccer team earn its first win of the season, a 2-1 triumph over Robert Morris University on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory snapped a 10-game winless streak for Howard (1-7-1) dating back to last season and was the first win for the team since the Lady Bison defeated Delaware State 1-0 on October 22, 2013. Howard has now won back to back games over Robert Morris (2-7-1).

"I am very proud of the team," Howard head coach Brent Leiba said of the win. "We have been playing outstanding for most of this season, and unfortunately have not come away with [victories] so it was great that we finally rewarded ourselves for our play. It was a much needed result especially heading into conference play."

Howard opening the game's scoring in the eighth minute as freshman forward Whitney White carried the ball the deep to the RMU endline before playing a low pass to the center of the box. The senior Walcott placed a shot inside the near right post after collecting White's pass and setting up to her right. Walcott's goal was her team leading third of the season.

In the 34th minute, the Lady  Bison took a 2-0 lead after a steal and cross from freshman forward Jordan Bynoe landed in the middle of the box and in front of a streaking Ruddy, who chipped home the second score over RMU goalie Becky Schoenecker.

Robert Morris came out more aggressive in the second half as the Colonials took 11 of their 19 shots and 11 of their 13 corners in the period. RMU's Maleha Kureishy converted on a penalty kick in the 76th minute to cut Howard's lead to 2-1.

Senior goalkeeper Kyra Dickinson was stellar between the pipes, stopping all seven of RMU's other shots on goal.

The Lady Bison will begin their inaugural league slate in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) on Friday, September 26 with a 5 p.m. ET matchup with Alcorn State University.
