Late Score Dooms Women’s Soccer in 2OT Against ETSU

Box Score WASHINGTON, DC --- A valiant effort by the Howard women's soccer team proved to be for naught as a header in the last minutes of double overtime pushed the East Tennessee State Bucs past the Lady Bison, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Greene Stadium.

In the 109th minute, ETSU's Jasmin Dutton sent a right side cross into the box that Summer Peterson headed home for the game winning goal.

For Howard, the effort was especially impressive, given that the team has played four overtime games in its last five.

Howard (0-5-1) played its strongest game of the year, matching its season goal total in the first half and putting together its best shooting performance of the season (.250, .750 on goal).

Senior defender Treschelle Gibson-Serrette scored her first two goals of the season while junior forward Nikanya Clark added another score. Junior midfielder Dytria Ruddy and sophomore midfielder Sara Vaughan had an assist each.

Senior goalkeeper Kyra Dickinson made eight saves while playing all 110 minutes of the double overtime affair.

The two first half goals Howard scored against ETSU (7-1) doubled their season scoring output from its five previous games.
After allowing an easy Jasmin Dutton-to-Hannah Short ETSU goal less than 30 seconds into the game, Clark put Howard on the board in the 17th minute with a 15 yard goal in the box to tie the game.

The Lady Bison would add their second goal in the 30th minute as Ruddy connected with Gibson-Serrette on a pass from midfield that Gibson-Serrette slipped past ETSU goalie Jasmine Elliott from 30 yards out.

ETSU would again open the half by scoring the period's first goal. The Bucs' Molly Collison gathered a pass from Hannah Short in the 49th minute to even the game at 2-2.

Not to be denied, the Lady Bison would strike back in the 66th minute. Vaughan put another midfield pass in front of Gibson-Serrette, who hooked a shot behind a charging Elliott to give Howard a 3-2 lead.

ETSU increased its offensive pressure and eventually cashed in the 81st minute, with Short scoring on an assist from Dutton.
Howard's shot efficiency from regulation disappeared in the overtime periods, as the team only mustered one shot in the extra 20 minutes while ETSU took six – many of them stopped by Dickinson from point blank range.

The Lady Bison will play its final contest of the season at Greene Stadium on Tuesday, September 16 at 7 p.m. against Longwood University. The game will serve as senior day for Howard's seven-member graduating class (the team will play the remainder of its home games against Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) teams in Vestavia Hills, Alabama).
