AKRON, OH --- The Howard University football team will kick off the 2014 season against the Zips of Akron at 7 pm on Thursday. The game will be televised live on ESPN3 and webcast on WHBC 96.3 HD3 with Trevin Jones calling the action.

In Akron, the Bison face a formidable FBS opponent. The Zips, who won four of their last five to end the 2013 season, have been picked to finish second in the East Division of the tough Mid-American Conference (MAC).

Akron features a balanced attack that relies on the running of senior running back Jawon Chisholm (869 yards, 8 TDs last season) and the passing of junior QB Kyle Pohl (225-of-4022,438 yards, 14 TDs) to pace their offense.

The Howard defense will have to apply pressure on Pohl to slow down the Zips prolific attack.

"They like to play fast," said Howard head coach Gary Harrell.  "We have to make sure that we stay disciplined in our assignments."

The Bison also enter the game on a roll, having won five of their last six last season. They will rely on the leadership of senior quarterback Greg McGhee, who accounted for over 3,200 yards of total offense and its running game which averaged over 200 yards rushing per game.

"It is no secret that we want to run the football," said Harrell.  "Their defense poses a challenge for us, especially their ends who put a lot of pressure off the edge."

This is the second meeting between the two schools. In the first meeting, Akron jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead and never looked back in posting a 65-7 win over the Bison.

"It is important that we go in and not worry about the crowd or who we are playing," explained Harrell.  "We have to play Howard University football, running the football, stopping the run, protecting the football and playing great special teams."

GAME NOTES: McGhee and Pohl are both candidates for the AFCA Good Works Award - McGhee for the FCS and Pohl for the FBS.

NEXT UP: The Bison travel to New Jersey to take on the Scarlet Knight of Rutgers on September 6 at 12 noon. Game will be televised on The Big Ten Network. The Zips will travel to Penn State on September 6.
