New York, NY---Chris Sengfelder scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the second half to lead four players in double figures as Fordham pulled away to a 74-59 win over Howard in a non-conference game at the Rose Hill Gym.
The two teams went toe to toe in the first 20 minutes as the Rams (4-6) took a 28-26 lead to the locker room. James "J-Byrd" Daniel, III made sure Howard (7-8) stayed close by tallying 13 of his team's points in the first half.
When they returned to the court for the second half, Sengfelder set the tone with seven of his team's first points during a 12-4 run that opened a 40-30 lead, the largest of the game. The Bison aided the Rams' cause with turnovers that they would convert into points. Each time Howard tried to cut into the deficit, Fordham would answer with baskets from Sengfelder, Mandell Thomas (17 points), Eric Paschall (15 points) or Ryan Groomes (11 points).
"This game brought back memories of last year's game (a 79-60 loss)," recalled Howard head coach
Kevin Nickelberry. "We stayed around in the first half and got outplayed in the second half."
With Howard only getting production from Daniel and Carlton, it was not nearly enough to keep pace with the hosts, who shot a sizzling 65 percent from the field in the second half, many coming on dunks or close-in shots near the basket.
"Fordham did a good job of spreading us out in the second half and getting the ball to their scorers in rhythm," he noted.
Howard aided the Rams' cause by turning the ball over 14 times of which Fordham converted into 23 points.
The Bison came into the game having held its last five opponents to 30 percent shooting the field and were a plus 6 in the rebounding area. But the Rams shot 54 percent for the game, won the battle of the boards, 37-24 and held a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint.
"This was one of the worst defensive and rebounding efforts we have had all year," lamented Nickelberry of his team's performance. "Quite frankly, if we don't defend or rebound better, we won't win many games."
Daniel finished with 19 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. Carlton tallied 12 and
Jared Norsworthy 10 off the bench.
The Bison will have a much-needed break and will not play again until January 8 when they travel to Cornell.
"This is a good opportunity for us to get their attention in practice," said Nickelberry. "We can go back to the drawing board and bounce back against Cornell. We have bounced back all season and I fully expect us to again."
