WASHINGTON, DC --- Looking to finish their 2014 home schedule on a high note, the Howard women's basketball team instead found itself on the wrong side of a 48-78 defeat at the hands of the Temple University Owls on Thursday evening at Burr Gymnasium.
For the seventh time in 11 games, redshirt sophomore guard
Te'Shya Heslip led Howard (1-10) in scoring, registering 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 shooting from the foul line. Heslip has scored 10 or more points in seven straight games and eight of the team's 11.
Junior center
Victoria Gonzales, who has battled injuries all season and missed four of 11 games, scored 12 points to post her first double digit effort of the season. Senior forward
Cheyenne Brown added 11 points, her third consecutive game in double figures.
Even with the trio's efforts, Temple (4-7) forced the Lady Bison into one of its worst statistical games of the season. Howard's 48 total points, 15 field goals made, 33 turnovers committed and 22 made free throws allowed represent the worst production in each category this season. Their seven total assists tied for the team's second-lowest output of the year.
Howard struggled from the outset as the Owls opened the game on 22-5 run over the first 10 minutes of the half. HU would pull within eight to ten points on seven separate occasions over the next 20 minutes but could never make the game closer than a four-possession affair.
Temple produced four double-digit scorers and was paced by Tanaya Atkinson's 22-point, 11-rebound double-double.
NEXT UP: The Lady Bison will look to rebound this weekend when the team faces the University of Virginia on Sunday, December 21 at 6 p.m.
