Washington, DC—James "J-Byrd" Daniel scored a team-high 14 points and
Solomon Mangham and
Damon Collins added 11 and 10, respectively as Howard University snapped a two-game losing streak with an easy 78-51 win over Hood College in a non-conference game at Burr Gymnasium.
The Bison (2-3), who were coming off two close losses to the College of William and Mary on Tuesday and Radford on Thursday, made quick work of the Mustangs, bolting out to a 27-5, not allowing the visitors to score a field goal until the 7:54 mark and holding them to 16 percent shooting (4 of 25) from the field.
Sharpshooter Daniel set the tone for Howard as he connected on 4 of 8 from the floor, including 3 of 6 from beyond the arc for 11 points. The Bison's swarming defense that featured full-court pressure, forced Hood into turnovers and missed shots. It allowed Daniel and his mates to get out and run. The Bison shot 56 percent and took a 46-17 lead to the locker room.
"I thought we came out and played with a lot of energy and effort in the first half," noted Howard head coach
Kevin Nickelberry. "It helped us get defensive stops and get out in transition."
With the comfortable lead, Howard began to substitute freely as several reserves got more minutes. It did not always result in good basketball, however, according to Nickelberry.
"I wasn't happy with the second half results," said Nickelberry. "The reserves played hard, but didn't get stops or make shots we need them to do as we move forward. We will keep working at it and move forward to UMBC on Tuesday."
Mangham, a reserve forward added 7 rebounds to his 11 points while
Keon Hill, a reserve red-shirt sophomore guard scored 6 points and handed out a career-high 7 assists.
Jared Norsworthy, another reserve guard, contributed 7 points and 6 rebounds. James "JC" Carlton tallied 8 points and 7 rebounds.
Hood (1-3) was led by Chris Cook with 14, Terell Buyck with 12, Tanner Ruth with 11 and Damien Hamlin with 10.
NEXT UP: The Bison travel to Baltimore, MD to take on the Retrievers of UMBC on Tuesday at 7 pm.
