Howard Wins Easily Over Goucher

Box Score Washington, DC---James "JC" Carlton scored a game-high 18 points and James "J-Byrd" Daniel added 17 to lead Howard University to a 101-54 win over Goucher College in the home opener in Burr Gymnasium.

Carlton and Daniel combined for 25 of their team's 46 first half points en route to a 46-20 lead.

"I feel that we played with the same effort.  The only difference was that we were at home and we executed better," said Carlton, who added seven rebounds and 3 blocks.  "Guys were getting involved and making plays tonight."

The Bison were coming off an 82-49 loss at the University of Miami on Friday in which they shot the ball poorly from the field (28 percent) and missed free throws (52 percent).

But Howard (1-1) had a much better showing against the Gophers, connecting on 48 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.  Carlton made good on 4 of 5, James "JT' Miller on 3 of 4, and while Daniel shot only 4 of 10 from the field, he made up by hitting on all 6 of his free throws.

"Traveling out to Miami was the issue," said Howard head coach Kevin Nickelberry.  "Miami was a bigger, stronger team and it was the first game for a lot of our guys.  It was the first game for Carlton and the first game for Miller being healthy.  It was the first game for (Theodore) Boyomo in two years.  We played hard against Miami and we played hard tonight.  We just didn't make shots there.  Tonight we made shots."

While the Howard offense was running well, the defense posed problems for Goucher, forcing the visitors to miss 22 of their 26 first half shots for 15 percent.

In the second half, Howard began to substitute freely and everyone got into the act.  Thirteen of the 14 players who dressed scored.  Marcel Boyd, Ausar Madison and Theodore Boyomo each scored eight points while Dalique Mingo contributed 9, making all his shots from the field in only six minutes of play.

"We have a lot more weapons this year that we didn't have last year," noted Nickelberry.  "Hopefully we can build on this."

The Gophers (0-1) got 10 points each from Alex Noble and Kevin Miles in a losing effort.

The Bison will play three games in the next seven days, two of them on the road.

"It's good that we're going to be able to rest a lot of guys and use our depth as we prepare for a tough Radford and a tough William and Mary team," explained Nickelberry.  "We just have to take them one game at a time and hopefully stay healthy."
