Vestavia Hills, AL --- The Howard University women's soccer team has a chance to accomplish a rare feat today: winning a regular season championship in its first year as a member of a conference.
The Lady Bison (9-8-1, 8-1-0 SWAC) can capture the Southwestern Athletic Conference crown with either a wwinor a tie against the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff (2-14-0, 1-6-0 SWAC) today at 1 pm Eastern.
Howard had a scare on Friday when Grambling (1-10-1, 1-7 SWAC) jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead. But the Lady Bison, who have won nine of their last 10 and three in a row, regrouped in the second half, rallying to tie the game at 2-2 and eventually prevailing, 3-2 on a
Nikanya Clark goal following a beautiful assist from
Nia Walcott in the 87th minute that completed the comeback.
Howard has one remaining game on the schedule at Delaware State on October 29 at 7 pm and will then prepare for the SWAC Tournament, which kicks off on November 6.
The following are the possible scenarios that will determine the title:
- A win vs UAPB will put Howard at 9-1 (27 pts) and clinch the title outright;
- A tie will put Howard at 8-1-1 (25 points); PVAMU can get to 8-1-1 by winning out but Howard holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.
- A loss would leave Howard at 8-2 (24 points); anything but PVAMU winning out gives Howard the title.
