Lady Bison Struggle Against FAMU

Box Score
TALLAHASSEE, FL --- Sophomore center Victoria Gonzalez scored a team-high 14 points for the Howard women's basketball team in its game against Florida A&M University but it proved futile against the Rattlers' attack as the Lady Bison dropped an 87-42 decision to FAMU on Saturday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center.

Gonzalez, who was a solid 6-of-10 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the free throw line, scored 12 of her points in the first half and also had six rebounds, three blocks & one steal in the game. The Atlanta native's play was the bright spot in a first half that saw the Lady Bison playing behind for the majority of the period.

Gonzalez scored the first basket of the game at the 17:10 mark and redshirt freshman guard Te'Shya Heslip put in Howard's next shot to give the Lady Bison a quick 4-0 cushion with 16:46 to go. A pair of three pointers from FAMU guard Kimberly Sparkman gave the Rattlers a two point lead with 16:11 remaining but Gonzalez would answer with her second field goal to tie the game at 6-6 with 15:33.

For the remainder of the half, Howard struggled to keep up with FAMU's offensive output as the Rattlers doubled up the Lady Bison, 35-17, to take a 41-23 lead into the locker room with Gonzalez scoring eight of the team's points during the 15-minute stretch.
FAMU would use a 20-8 surge to extend its lead above 30 points by the midpoint of the second half and pushed it pas 40 before the last media timeout.

Preseason Co-Player of the Year Jasmine Grice led all scorers with a season high 34 points.

"FAMU is a great team and tonight we just weren't able to hit our shots. Every game in this league is a tough one so we just have to bounce back and be prepared for Bethune on Monday," said Head Coach Tennille Adams after the defeat.

Howard's next game will be the aforementioned matchup at Bethune-Cookman University on Monday evening. Tipoff for the MEAC doubleheader is set for 5:30 pm.
