Lady Bison Win OT Thriller Over UMES

Heslip hits game-winner

Box Score WASHINGTON, DC --- In one of the most exciting games in recent school history, the Howard women's basketball team staged an epic rally from 21 points down to force overtime and hit the game winner with 5.1 seconds remaining to give the Lady Bison a 77-75 victory over the Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks on Saturday afternoon in Burr Gymnasium.

Redshirt freshman Te'Shya Heslip's near triple double of 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists led the Howard offense that saw four players score in double figures. Graduate student Shavonne Duckett, playing for the first time since missing a pair of games with a leg injury, recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Redshirt senior Cabria Johnson had a double-double as well with 12 points and 13 rebounds while junior forward Cheyenne Brown added 10 points.

UMES (3-12, 0-4 MEAC) was led by junior guard Jessica Long's 21 points.

Howard trailed UMES by 14 at halftime (29-43) and saw their deficit balloon to 21 points with 16:04 remaining in the game.

The Lady Bison would start their comeback by using a 23-9 run over the next 10:46 - capped by a 13-0 stretch - to trim the Lady Hawks' lead to under double digits (58-65) with 5:02 to go. Over the next three and a half minutes, Howard would continue its surge by outscoring UMES 11-8; a pair of Long free throws put HU behind by four, 69-73, with 22 seconds left.

On Howard's next possession, Heslip would score on a quick drive to make the score 71-73. A quick HU foul put UMES sophomore forward Taryana Kelly on the free throw line for a pair of free throws. Kelly missed both shots, giving Howard a chance to tie or win the game with 17 seconds to go.

Johnson would save her strongest plays for the last possession of regulation. She grabbed the defensive rebound of Kelly's second shot, pulled down an offensive rebound of a missed Heslip jumper, and put home the game-tying basket with two seconds left.

The overtime period saw both teams combine for seven missed shots and two missed free throws before Heslip converted twice from the line to give HU a 75-73 lead with 3:03 remaining. No one would score again until UMES senior guard Breonna Evans scored inside to knot the game again at 75-75 with 11 seconds left.

Howard would put the ball in the hands of Heslip for the final shot and the point guard drove the ball from the top of the key to the foul line and drilled the game winning basket.
