VMI Slips By Men's Soccer In OT

WASHINGTON, DC --- Despite taking an early lead on a spectacular goal, the Howard University men's soccer team was unable earn their second win of the season, dropping a 2-1 overtime decision to the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute Saturday afternoon at Greene Stadium.

Junior Frederick Todd III scored one of the most impressive goals of the season in the 20th minute of the first half. Todd set up from the right side of the field and took a shot from the near side 45-yard line. VMI goalie Alex Guerra came up in the box looking to play the shot as it sailed but he misjudged the ball's trajectory and the shot sailed over his head and into the net.

The euphoria of the high-level shot and 1-0 Howard lead would be short lived as the Keydets would answer nearly 17 minutes later by converting on a corner kick. VMI's Alex Hartman send the corner perfectly to the front of the net, where Aaron White headed it home to tie the match, 1-1.

HU had several opportunities to put the game away in the second half, as the Bison outshot VMI 9-2 in the later 45 minutes. However, neither team was able to pull ahead and the game was sent into overtime.

Unfortunately for Howard, a little over a minute of the added time would run off the clock before the game would be decided in the visitors' favor.

At the 91:06 mark, VMI's Travis Borkey capitalized on a misplayed ball by Howard goalie Jordan Austin, who was making his first start of the season. Austin's bobble of a Keydet shot resulted in the quick game-winner.

Todd led the way for the Bison with a team-high four shots and the team's lone goal.

HU will play its last road game of the year on Tuesday, November 5 when the team travels to the University of Pittsburgh for a 7:30pm match.
