Volleyball Picks Up Signature Win Over UMES

Breaks Hawks' record home winning streaks

Box Score PRINCESS ANNE, MD --- Howard University Volleyball picked up one of the biggest wins in the program's recent history Friday evening, defeating MEAC North Division rival University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22).

The Lady Bison's third straight victory snapped a pair of impressive UMES streaks - their nation's best 31-game home winning streak and their 35-game MEAC home winning streak.

Head Coach Shaun Kupferburg said of the win, "UMES is a tough place to win and it was a big step for our program. We did a great job siding out tonight and if that continues we should be competitive in every match"

Freshman Dominique Cleggett was one of three Lady Bison to register 11 kills and led the team with a .409 attack percentage (11-2-22). Freshman Katherine Broussard and junior Meagan Lagerlef were the other Howard players with double digit kills, with Broussard adding a team-high 19 digs and notching another double-double on the season. Juniors Stephanie Shultis led the way with 41 of the team's 44 assists.

The opening set was the most competitive of the four, with nine ties and three lead changes between Howard (13-5, 2-0 MEAC) and UMES (2-12, 1-1 MEAC). After the set's last tie at 12-12, HU would go on a 13-6 run to take the lead.

UMES responded by taking the second set. The Hawks dominated the early goings and led 12-6. Howard used a 11-5 run to tie the game for the only time in the set, 17-17, but UMES outscored Howard 8-4 the rest of the way to even the match.

In the third set, the Lady Hawks would score the first point of the set on an error. Both teams would exchange the first eight points of the set, making the score 4-4. The Lady Bison began to create separation afterwards scoring the next six out of eight points to take a 10-6 lead. UMES would continue to fight back, being as close as four points at the 21-17 mark. The Lady Bison would score the last four points in the sets to take the third set, 25-17.
