Late Goal Propels Women's Soccer To Third Straight Victory

WASHINGTON, DC --- It took nearly 80 minutes for the Howard University women's soccer team to score their first goal against South Carolina State University, but the Lady Bison made it count as the team won its third straight game by defeating the Bulldogs, 1-0.

The victory improves Howard's record to 5-6-1 and avenges a 2-0 loss to SCSU in Orangeburg on October 4. South Carolina State now sits at 6-9-1 on the year.

In the first half, neither team was able to gain an advantage over the other as both teams took four shots and Howard took the only corner kick in the period.

However, the Lady Bison picked up the intensity in the second half and it paid off in the 79th minute. After Howard forced a corner kick, junior Nia Walcott sent the corner perfectly across the box, where freshman Carmen Suarez headed home the game-winning goal, her third of the season.

Overall, Howard outshot SCSU 12-9 and earned three more corners (5-3) than the Bulldogs.

Junior Kyra Dickinson only needed to make three saves in her 90 minutes of work to record her fourth shutout in the team's five wins.

Howard will play again on October 22 when the Lady Bison travel north to Dover, DE to take on Delaware State University for a 7:00 PM matchup.
