Larry Strickland

In 1984, Larry Strickland was hired as the head men tennis coach at Howard. He has continued to serve as Howard’s head tennis coach for 34 years. He was ask to start a women’s program in 1986 and has served as the only women’s head coach at Howard University for 32 years. His teams have won nine Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference Championships.

During Strickland’s tenure as head coach, he has coached over 100 Intercollegiate Tennis Association(ITA) Scholar All Americans. He has had four teams achieve the ITA Team All-Academic Team award. Strickland has been named MEAC Coach of the Year 11 times. He received USTA/ITA National Community and Campus Outreach Award for 2011-2012. In 2015, he was named the HBCU Coach of the Year. His women's team has won three HBCU National Championships (1994, 1995 and 2015). In 2018, he was inducted into the Howard University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Strickland was a professor at Howard for seven years (1992-99) and was a tennis instructor for the Joy of Sports Foundation (1997-00) and the Washington Tennis and Education Foundation (1992-96).

He graduated with a bachelor's degree in fine art and physical education from Wilmington College in 1969. Strickland is certified by the U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) and the United States Professional Tennis Registry (USPTR).

Strickland resides in the District of Columbia.
